TRADICIONES MAYAS1jpg

The Alborada Maya, a religious festival that takes place in Tulum, right in the ceremonial center. For several decades, the founding families of the place, made this event, from 7 to 18 March each year, to thank God for the good harvest and so continue to apply throughout the year. It is a celebration where we honor various saints, through pilgrimages, prayers, novenas, dynamic bullfighting and Mayan music offerings.

As part of the celebration of the Alborada Maya, Tulum Church, is decked and is visited by many people from nearby communities and Mayan priests and leaders of other ceremonial centers, such as Cross speaker, Chumphon and Chancah.

Carnival of Tulum

tradiciones mayas 3

Tulum held, starting the year a little carnival that takes place weeks before Lent arrives. Then in July, is made the curious Feast of the Talking Cross. The latter shows a revealing combination of Catholic and pagan cultural reasons. The origins of this celebration can be identified in the finding, according to tradition, a mahogany cross a cenote located in the community of Chan Santa Cruz. This happened after finishing the War of the Castes, the largest indigenous rebellion against the yoke of Creoles and mestizos, during the nineteenth century. Either way, it is not easy to trace the crucible of the traditions and festivities of Tulum, as they often have limited dissemination outside the communities where they are held.
